It was a sort of achievement for the complex security that they could nab one of the accused who had snatched a hand bag around 11 am from a senior lady walking with her spouse near Aromas in Hiranandani Powai on 28th Jan, the bag contained a cash of ` 5000 and important items like credit cards and keys etc. The commandos did chase them at the time of incident till one of the accused flashed a chopper at him narrowly the commando.
Having fled on the day of crime, one of them was spotted a day later on the 2nd Feb, on the same bike by the private security guards in Hiranandani Complex. On suspicion, the private security of the complex nabbed the biker and questioned him, the youth confessed his crime of having snatched the bag on Friday in Hiranandani. On searching him they recovered 17 SIM cards 4 mobiles and a 'Human Rights' ID Card from him. He was handed over to Powai police.
On further investigation it was learnt that on 1st Feb this youth, Tousif Khan (23) was arrested by the Oshiwara police on 30 Jan along with his accomplice Nazim (same guy who was with him in Powai on the snatching day). The duo it is learnt belong to a middle class family living in Pantnagar Ghatkopar.
Tousif managed to get himself out from Oshiwara police within one hour of his arrest flashing his father's ID card and with his contacts. They were arrested by the Oshiwara police in some drug case. His accomplice (Nazim) was detained by Ohiwara police and has now been brought to Powai police on 2nd Feb for further investigation.
During investigation by media it came out that the bike seized from the duo has been stolen from Oshiwara police station, this has put the cops in a tight spot. Now a water tight case has been built and they are in police custody. With the CCTV footage and their flashing of chopper at the private guard a strong case is being framed. They will soon be produced in the court.
Senior Inspector Ashok Jadhav of Powai police said, “We are interrogating the duo to find out how many chain snatching and other offences they have committed in our area.”
Meanwhile, the Hiranandani administration has woken up to the challenge, Joseph Reddy GM Admin said, “We are in the process of installing more cameras along the main road to monitor the area and increase surveillance of the complex. Meantime, we request the residents to be vigilant and cooperate with us and the police.”
